Herseaux

Primary and Elementary School

APractice architecture

The project was a contest of an Elementary and Primary school for 230 children in a city near Brussels.

It was the main contest of my internship there; the goal was not only to design a school in the village of Herseaux, but to define a new prototype of school for all the new schools in the province.

Five agencies were shortlisted after a first selection.

The prototype had to be thought for maximum pre-production of the elements to shorten construction time. The concept was to pre-fabricate walls and facades that would contain the structure, technics and insulation, and only had to be assembled on site, allowing a dry construction.
The result of the research was promising and was shown with an stacked axonometric view of a typical school floor.

My work was first to design a scaled organization chart to determine the differents connections in the project. I then worked on the research for the prototype and how to assemble pre-produced volumes and partitions from the extension of a few classes only to an whole newbuilt school. Finding a good pattern for Herseaux’s school would allow to repeat it elsewhere. I also worked on the research model and on the final detailed model.
